Mad Scientist's Lab Halloween Party

Mad Scientist Party foodI've been posting creative Halloween party ideas, and now I get to share my own. After months of planning, and the craziness of pulling it all together, my first Halloween party was a huge success!

My plan was a open house, people coming and going, a few here and there, alas, that was not the case, as the bulk of people came at the same time and more trickled in, but not a lot left. But because it was a school night, it wound down right on time. Because of that, I had not a single moment and was moving the whole time, so a friend was gracious enough to take pix for me. I had an army of teen helpers which was amazing, because I'm learning to delegate and not do it all myself.

There were lots of dim orange lighting, candles and black lights, but the camera flash counteracts the effect. Trust me when I say it all looked really cool. I have other pictures coming, but here is what I have.... Mad Scientist Party food 2

The Food - I love my labels, I think renaming stuff makes food more interesting. I had to counteract all the sweets so the main dish was"Chili Con Carnivore" (turkey chili with crackers), which I hear was really good, never got to have any. "Lime jello with gummy worms and candy spores" in petri dishes I ordered from Home Science Tools. I piped frosting through a large tip for "Monster Brains" and a great brain mold with gummy worms floated in "Dead Man's Punch". The "Boocakes" are Peeps ghosts poked through with a toothpick, sitting on chocolate cupcakes rolled in crushed chocolate graham crackers. In the capote is "Ghoul Fuel", Chex Mix with gummy eyeballs added. And of course, we had to have "Devil's Eggs". Not pictured, the "Monster Bites", apple wedges filled with peanut butter and candy corn teeth. They went too fast.Mad Scientist Party activities

The Activities - In one room, we were playing Monster House with no sound, and yet the kids were mesmerized. I like to have something playing in the background, so kids can take a moment from the insanity. In another room, I emptied most of the toys and furniture and hung two black light fixtures, and white balloons with glow sticks in them for an eerie effect. The remaining furniture had white sheets on them, and Halloween music was playing. It became a dance/beating each other with balloons/popping the balloons then fighting with the glow sticks room. My husband was not pleased.

In the garage, I covered one side black plastic panels, to hide all of our stuff, the other side has gray butcher paper painted like stone, to give that mad lab feel. Cobwebs were strung up and dim lighting due to a few lamps. There were 4 stations: "Bubbling Blood" a demo of what happens when you mix Vampire's Blood (vinegar colored red) and Garlic Powder (baking soda); "Build a Molecule" with colored marshmallows and toothpicks; "Pick Your Poison"(not pictured) where kids tested different solutions with pH paper (also from Home Science Tools) and had to match up what color they changed to. I named the checklist with things like "Essence of Wolfsbane" "Zombie Venom", etc. etc. By far, every one's favorite was "Slime Time". It's a really cool recipe I found online. It's the type that when you play with it, it becomes a solid, and then becomes an ooze when you stop playing. I premixed the borax solution, then the kids added the glue and water, and their choice of concentrated coloring to a paper cup, stirring with a Popsicle stick, then slowly adding the borax solution. Then they have to put their hands in to pull the slime out and knead it for awhile. Mad Scientist Party wax hands All the kids loved it, it was squishy and yucky. They put their creations in plastic baggies that had instructions on it, to keep refrigerated when not in play and wash your hands.

The hit with the older kids (and a few adults) was the wax hands. There is this amazing wax called FlexWax I purchased from Oriental Trading. It's a low temp wax that can be used to cast on the body because it doesn't need a lot of heat to melt, and won't burn the skin. With an rice cooker I found at Value Village (you have to heat the wax in a double boiler), the victim slathers up their hand in Vaseline, then dips into the wax, and cools it in cold water. Repeat a few times, and you get a really cool effect. The fun part is pulling the mold off. They also went home in gallon bags. Mad Scientist Party decor

The Decor - Ok, so I had a lot of stuff going on. The black light room had plastic spiders puttied up on the walls, and spider webs everywhere. The Caution tape corner is covering a fog machine (note to self, one spray of fog is enough in a small room). I tried to get a picture without the flash to show the black light effect (yes, I'm still going to beat that dead horse), but not quite working. My step-daughter traced out like 60 bats from construction paper, using a cookie cutter as a template, and we hung them in the TV room from fishing line, and all over the walls. And a great paper chain across the ceiling as well. My shelf wall is full of creepy jars and stained cheesecloth, and plastic flies everywhere. I borrowed every table and folding chair I could for enough places to sit and eat, and my kitchen table has this great centerpiece of Martha's glitter skulls. Sorry, I purchased them last year, and it looks like she didn't have them out this season. The tablecloth is an old, stained cloth that I ripped up. Lots of candles on the table and everywhere I could think of. The bathroom lights were changed for black light bulbs, and I changed the kitchen ones to orange bulbs as well.Mad Scientist Party decor I hate that light fixture, so I draped "bloody" cheesecloth and black branches on it, just to do something with it.

The Treat Bags - Yes, I love my little Frankenbags. They were full of gummy and chocolate body parts and other candy. The little ones' bags had stickers and pencils. I also gave my teen helpers small wooden Halloween totes that had a bag of candy tied to them, and they all had made wax hands and slime. And all the kids had their slime and some took their molecules home too. BTW, that's me in the blue scrubs with a very angry Obi-Wan Kenobi at my side. I was going for a undead scientist, but turned into a ghoulish 2nd year med student. I was looking for a lab coat, but I kept putting it off, and could only find scrubs at the thrift stores. Halloween 2008 - A Carvin' We Will Go

Only a few days until Halloween, so this will be my last Halloween post, because by this point, I just can't help you! Now it's time to turn your attention to most folks' favorite part of Halloween, carving a pumpkin. Check out these celebrity stencils at BHG.com where you can carve a political statement of Senators Obama and McCain, or your favorite comedy host like David Letterman or John Stewart.

pumpkin carving collage

Check out Martha's Halloween Workshop on carving pumpkins for lots of inspiration. Her owls and blackened pumpkins require power tools...you've been warned. Also involving power tools, DIY network has an awesome slide show of extreme carvings, my favorites are the dragon and the sun man.

But sometimes, there is that rare creature who doesn't feel the joy of carving, after nearly cutting off a finger trying to carve a plastic pumpkin. Hey, my family didn't do Halloween, so I grew up without the pleasure of sticking my hand into a pumpkin to get all the slimy seeds out. Plus, I know the fun is in the carving, but in a few days, not-so-attractive flies will be swarming. So I offer a few less destructive ways to decorate a pumpkin.... pumpkin family

Halloween 2008 - Treats Not Tricks Pt. 1

Halloween cupcakes and cookiesWe all know that Halloween is all about the goodies. Here are a few treats that aren't too tricky to pull off. Wow them with Martha's fabulous creepcakes. These witch cupcakes will cast a spell on your younger guests. Black cat's paw cookies are the cat's meow....sorry I had to do that. Have Halloween in 3-D with cookies that interlock to make freestanding treats, courtesy of Fancy Flours. Halloween treat collage 2Set out cookies, colored frosting and candies and let kids create their own Creepy Crawlers. Good and bad for you, these monster mouths will get eaten in no time! These festive S'mores are less hassle than the campfire variety and just as delicious. Made from a graham cracker, this Frankenstein mask is easy to duplicate.

adult Halloween treatsNeed a few elegant treats for a adult soiree or a special hostess gift? Try these eye-pleasers...impress your guests with Williams-Sonoma's assortment of miniature skulls that arrive in a coffin-shaped box, or a delightfully tasty place setting with their personalized bat cookies. How yummy! Big chunks of ooey gooey handmade chocolate chip fudge with marshmallows get the "stick treatment" before being dipped in Belgian chocolate and decorated by hand. Who'd ever guess that this otherworldly creation is actually moist yellow cake layered with mocha mousse, and wrapped in black-and purple-tinted white chocolate? Both the dipped marshmallows and cake are from Dean & Deluca.  Stay tuned for Treats Not Tricks Pt.2.

brown bag FrankenbagAnd while we are talking about Halloween ideas, I've been sharing a few sneak peeks into our Mad Scientist's Lab party over at my blog.  I made this Frankenbag from a brown paper bag and paper, as an example for my Fall Events class, and created a more assembly-line-friendly creation for our party's favor bags. Halloween 2008 - It's What's Inside That Counts

Halloween wall muralContinuing on with my Halloween series, today's post is all about indoor decor. Although you've tricked out the table, especially if you are having a spooky soiree, you need the rest of your home to be just as festive! Set it all off with my favorite prop, Pottery Barn's rockin' spooky house wall mural. I love, love, love how the contrasting table decor really pops off the black and white setting. Halloween collage

I spied this at Target; the Coffin Mister is perfect for a ghoulish corner tabletop. An easy DIY, check out these spiders that swarm spooky corners lit with votives. Turn the lights down and turn up the spooky Halloween atmosphere with Ballard Design's Halloween lighted bags and spooky candelabra. Halloween decor

I love doing candy buffets. Jean M's candy vases and these voluminous Camilla canisters, can be easily found at your favorite housewares stores. I've found my similar canisters at Marshall's for a fraction of the price (aaack...did that just sound like their commercials?) Horchow's Queen of Mean figurine and skull masks are unique conversation pieces that are sure to give your guests the chills. Pier 1 Halloween decor

Run to your local Pier 1 and recreate their fabulous Glamour Ghouls party; SPOOKY sign, spider web wall decor, glitter candleabrum, Halloween cookie totes, flocked flower pillows, chalk note stemless wine glasses and jars, BOO candles. I can't wait to go and check it all out. Not Just a Mommy!

Halloween 2008 - Setting the Scene Outdoors

Halloween outdoor decorSo, you've sent the invitations, have your table ideas, and now it's time to turn your attention outdoors.  There is always that house on the block every Halloween, tricked out to the nines with gianormous spiders and killer zombies, a graveyard scene with smog rolling across the moors, frightening small children. It's ok, you don't have to reanact the opening scene from "The Addams Family" to get your yard into the spirit. I call on my favorite woman-in-league-with-the-devil to inspire you...

A giant spider weaves an evil web to ensnare unlucky trick-or-treaters. I've made those egg sacks last year, my only problem was using white tights instead of pantyhose. The tights were too thick and didn't stretch down and hang as well. If you love carving, try any or all of these shapes on this year's pumpkin lantern and making an otherworldly path to your front door. Shroud your entrance in darkness with a Witch's Curtain. If eyes are the window to the soul, then these creepy silhouettes show a souless house.
Over at Better Homes and Gardens, many haunted slideshows await you. Here are a few hightlights.... Halloween outdoor decorScare the pants off passersby with a front yard featuring zombie-like mummies and haunted tombstones. I'm making the tombstones and beetles, I went and got my foam-cutter tool at Michael's (and with a 40% coupon, became a steal!). Hanging a jack-o'-lantern from a shepherd's crook creates an eerie but enticing scene, especially at night, it will look like an disembodied head. Another way to add shadowy webs to your front windows, this time with black yarn. A double-car garage door serves as a blank canvas upon which you can place a multitude of Halloween images. Halloween 2008 - The Table's the Thing

Buffetcollage_3Continuing on with our Halloween series, let's focus on tablescapes. The food is where everyone gravitates to at any party, so really make it stand out. Regardless of your party there are only two types, a buffet or a sit-down table. Here are some ideas to get you off and running towards your nearest craft store.

Halloween Buffet Table Ideas - A buffet is great for children's parties or if you are hosting a large adult party. Check out these ideas from BHG.com: A groan-ups' Halloween buffet table complete with tantalizing treats and decadent decor or this fa-boo-lous feast. A whimsical buffet complete with yummy mummy dogs and spiderweb soup will tickle the bones of all present. Martha Stewart's sweet-laden table is terrifying yet tantalizing.

Sitdowntablecollage

Halloween Sit-Downs Table Ideas - Sandra-Lee's Semi-Homemade have a wonderful write-up on this tres chic tablescape. I especially love the candy bundles that serve as a place setting and a party favor. Have a spooky chic dinner party with HWTM's very hip tablescape. It's so easy to recreate this look with scrapbook paper and those plastic spider rings you can find just about anywhere. Their fun kids' table starts with a playful palette of bright purples, oranges, and greens for your table linens and partyware. Spell-bind your guests with Social Couture's ghoulish setting, complete with skulls and specimen bottles.  Not Just a Mommy!
