I recently held a cd launch party for girlfriend, Janet Drew. The name of her new cd is Strawberries. I made huge batches of macerated strawberries and whipped cream and served them during the Janet's intermission.
Besides strawberries and cream or shortcake, here are some ideas for entertaining with the favored red berry.
In under 45 min, you can a jar of homemade jam to serve with biscuits to overnight guests. Ina never steers us wrong.
While this is traditionally Mexican, the drink fits in perfectly to my hometown, San Antonio. Agua Frescas are unexpected alternatives to lemonade, enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Make pitcher cocktails with them by adding vodka or tequila, Bellinis by using champagne for a portion of the water.
I like the recipe I found at Seasonal Ontario Food. Be conservative with sweetener and lemon juice (orange juice is a good substitute) so that you can develop the best balance with the sweetness of your strawberries. I substitute agave nectar for the honey.
The King of desserts, David Lebowitz, came up with this gem after finding a good deal on a flat of berries in Paris. Hit your local farmer's market and do the same. If you've never served homemade frozen treats for desserts, make a plan to do so. Your guests will love it.
Salads with Strawberries
It seems impossible to find a savory use of strawberries. Halibut is delicious when cooked with Balsamic vinegar and strawberries are too. Perhaps that is a combination to try.
Strawberries do work well in salads for luncheons and celebrations. My favorite at the moment is a salad of arugula greens (spinach has so been done), strawberries, hard boiled egg, Roquefort and pine nuts. Mixed greens with chicken, strawberries, brie and walnuts is very good. The color contrast of the green and red, along with the bitterness of greens with the sweet and tart berries make it a go to classic.
