Watch Olympics Present as we Remember Olympics Past! Come to the party dressed as a reminder of an Olympics past. For example, partygoers could dress in a toga to represent the original Greek Olympics, in 60's clothes for the 1960 Rome Olympics, in 80's clothes from the LA Olympics, cowgirl from Calgary, etc. Provide plenty of advance notice so that partygoers can have time to come up with really creative ideas. Wikipedia has a list of games and years. Give medals out to the best outfits. Bonus points go to those dressed in sports attire too (think long tennis skirts from early Olympics, ice skating outfits from winter olympics). For food, set up stations with cuisine from various past host cities (sushi from Tokyo (1964), Sapporo (1972) and Nagano (1998)). Be sure to include a placecard that has the cities and years represented by the food.

I think a contest oriented party would be fun..just like the Olympics. Figure out the events and participants that will be on the night you have your party and when your guests arrive they will have to pick a paper out of jar (or even better yet -- out of an old globe with a whole cut out of the top) that will tell them "who they are" At that point they will root for "themselves" in the different events. (depending on how many guests each guest can be more than one Olympian during the night) Make medals and have a podium -- (the medals should be of course edible -- like chocolate wrapped in foil). I would do a Map/Globe theme - using cut up maps as placemats under the food table, etc. There would definitely be a focus on China with asian inspired food and decorations.

I think a fab olympic party would have to be fancy dress as a competitor from the past who you admire or who performed outstandingly or just looked plain weird. Of course someone would have to have a lunchbox attached to their groin, you could get a sandpit in your garden and have your own long/triple jump, chariots of fire music in the background, blow up sumo outfits for a sumo competition with a difference! There would have to be your own olympic flame .. maybe in a hurricane lamp! Prizes could be given for most creative gymnastic interpretation to a funny song, spacehopper 100 metre sprint etc Cocktails from around the world would be in order, Margarita, sex on the beach, blue lagoon.
