When I first heard about the latest wedding trend - renting a wedding cake - I gasped. No really, there literally wasn't any oxygen left in the room because I had sucked it all into my lungs. But my gasp wasn't in horror. Quite the opposite, I was jumping for joy at this absolutely brilliant idea for brides on a budget.
Here's how it works:
You, the bride, rent a pre-designed wedding cake, which is nothing more than nicely decorated blocks of foam and plastic, similar to what a baker puts on display at their place of business. The BIG difference is that these rented faux cakes have a deep, dark, delicious, buttercream-filled secret: There is a carefully placed section of the fake cake that contains a real piece of cake for the couple to cut and feed to each other during the "cutting of the cake" ceremony during the reception.
But what about the rest of the guests? I mean, come on. Everyone else wants cake, too! No worries - there is a decadent, gooey, yummy sheet cake in the couple's most favorite flavor, tucked discretely in the venue's kitchen, ready to be cut and served by their dancing wait staff.
It's true. You can actually pay for your cake, and eat it too! Rented cakes run between $100 - $200 vs. the $500+ price for the real deal. And, you can even request a custom design if you don't see any ready-made designs that strike your cake-eating fancy.
Check your neighborhood cake baker to see if they offer this service. Or, visit the following vendors online:

I heard about this recently and I really like the idea. Every bakery has sample cakes made of styrofoam that they never intend to to anything with. Most are elated to be able to make some cash on these.
